  • A zine on basic tips to stay safe during demonstrations. To print, see ptzine.carrd.co

  • PAGE 2: PHONES & PHOTOS

  • it’s best to leave your phone at home to avoid being tracked by cops. if you HAVE to bring it, use a faraday cage to block signals (like stingray), airplane mode on, turn data/ wi-fi/ location off.

  • do not record or take pictures of other people. protestors have been murdered because of photos circulating social media. report uncensored pics. if you have to post, use a box to cover the whole body. footage is important but please be careful.

  • screenshots are better than original photos because they erase metadata.

  • don’t organize on social media. use end to end encryption ie: signal/ telegram/ riot.im

  • DON’T POST ABOUT IT ONLINE. JUST DONT. you’re endangering yourself and the people around you. people have been put on gov't watchlists because of this.

  • PAGE 3: YOUR APPEARANCE

  • COVER YOUR FACE & HAIR. TAKE OUT ALL PIERCINGS. NO TATTOOS SHOULD BE VISIBLE. HIDE ALL IDENTIFYING FEATURES.

  • wear all black to blend in. do not wear logos or designs.

  • long sleeves & long pants to protect against chemicals. natural fibers can absorb, but synthetic fibers can melt… be sure to use your own discretion.

  • layer your clothes. change out of the outer layer to blend into civilian crowd.

  • running shoes & shapeless clothes. nothing too loose; it’s easier to escape.

  • @WHITE PEOPLE & NONBLACK POC: use your privilege. protect your comrades and listen to them. you are less likely to be brutalized. use that to support marginalized people.

  • PAGE 4: WHAT TO BRING

  • LOTS OF WATER. spray bottles too.

  • backpack and snacks

  • bandana/ mask to cover face and protective eyewear if available.

  • extra change of clothes (in plastic bag). this is so you can change if your clothes get contaminated or if you need to escape. extra bandana soaked in lemon water in case of chemicals.

  • money for payphone, transportation, food, etc. CASH ONLY, do not use debit or credit because that can be tracked.

  • basic first aid kit

  • umbrella (useful as a shield; white people & nonblack poc take note)

  • A BUDDY! travel with a group of people you trust. strength in numbers.

  • PAGE 5: FIRST AID (tear gas & pepper spray)

  • /DO NOT WEAR CONTACT LENSES & DO NOT PUT ON LOTION OR ANY OILS

  • stay calm. do not touch face or eyes. get to fresh air and breathe slowly.

  • flush your eyes with a steady stream of water. other liquids can cause infection.

  • blow your nose and rinse your mouth with water- spit it out.

  • be sure to move out of the paricle cloud. walk, don’t run; taking in lots of air is bad. help people around you get out.

  • kick the canister away if you’re able to! tear gas canisters are hot, so don’t touch them unless you have heatproof gloves available. be cautious for explosions.

  • effects of tear gas and pepper spray can last hours to days. take a cold shower after the action; no hot water because it opens pores and can reactivate the chemicals.

  • PAGE 6: FIRST AID (rubber bullets & launched projectiles)

  • rubber bullets are metal bullets coated in rubber. they are still lethal.

  • safety glasses/ goggles recommended. if you don’t have access to these, you can use sunglasses (but not as effective)

  • if eyes are injured: apply cold compress & escort the injured somewhere safe. if they can see, feel free to return to the demonstration. if not, have them contact a doctor immediately. you can lose your vision to rubber bullets.

  • internal bleeding: immediately evacuate to advanced medical care.

  • bullet wounds: please be careful when dealing with them; those are best left to medical professionals. call for help, get to a safe area, check for an exit wound, and control the bleeding by applying pressure. if they’re not breathing, do CPR.

  • PAGE 7: KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

  • stay calm. keep hands visible.

  • first ask if you are free to leave. if yes, camly walk away.

  • if you are under arrest, you have the right to ask why. ask “am i being detained? why am i being detained?”

  • say “i am invoking my right to remain silent and i am invoking my right to an attorney.” you can call your lawyer and police aren’t allowed to listen in. do not say or sign anything without a lawyer.

  • you do not have to consent to a search of you/ your belongings. use a passcode.

  • write important phone [numbers] on your body in permanent marker. do your research! make sure the number isn’t immediately visible; you & the person can get targeted.
